Forklift Mounting

The largest vehicles of their time, two of these massive tractors with special semi-trailers were built by Scammel. They started life with Scammel four cylinder 7 liter, 85bhp petrol engines giving a maximum of 6mph but were soon converted to Gardner diesels to improve their 1mpg fuel consumption. KD9168 did numerous transport feats, including the movement of a 170 ton transformer in 1938, when working for MRS. Prior to the 100 tonners the only suitable vehicles had been cumbersome steam traction engines.

Engine: 6 cylinder Gardner 112bhp diesel.
8 Speed gearbox, Chain Drive (4 Chains) to 2 separate but in-line rear axles each carrying double sets of wheels. In-built jacks in the trailer allowing it to be lifted out of holes prior to placing steel plates under the wheels. One or two line of axles could be used at the rear of the trailer, braked and steered from a cabin behind them. The tractor was braked on the chain counter-shaft.
